Farewell, Richard Stanley

Here's a sad news.

SOME 1,000 people who packed the funeral mass of DBS chief executive Richard Stanley on Monday got a glimpse into his private life outside of his job as head of Singapore's largest lender.

Eulogies given by his father, close friends and colleagues painted Mr Stanley, who died on Saturday morning after a short battle with leukaemia, as a man who was not merely a 'tough' banker - but also one who 'showed great compassion'.

The packed pews at the Church of St Teresa in Kampong Bahru Road, where the funeral mass was held, was 'a reflection of how he has touched our lives', said Mr Koh Boon Hwee, DBS chairman, in his eulogy.

The gathering who came to pay their final respects was told Mr Stanley, 48, was a good-humoured and optimistic person, a loyal friend, a family man, a 'people's CEO', or just the affable American who insisted on being simply called 'Rich'.

But to his family, 'he was Rick', said Mr Stanley's father, Mr Richard Paul Stanley, his soft voice choking with emotion.

Mr Stanley senior, who flew in from New York with his wife about 10 days ago, said he and his son never exchanged any unkind words, and never disagreed.

In a sentiment which made many eyes water, he added: 'Because we live so far away in America, we never knew how much he was loved and respected until his death.'

Added Mr Koh: 'To me, the quality that characterises Rich as a person is his bigness of heart. Rich never bore any grudges.'
